Chapter Nine

Earlier in the day when Jasmine went out to pick up lunch, she’d set up a tent for her ohana to watch the Christmas parade from. Every year the parade route was always packed with people and it was common to set up a tent even a day early.

Jasmine and Mattie arrived early at the tent and had their spot claimed and ready for the parade.

A while later she heard a little voice say from behind, “Auntie Jasmine.” She turned and saw her nephew Henry. Her older sister Jessica was a few feet behind him making her way through the crowd.

“Where’s Sam and Pua?”

“He’s parking the car and Pua had something come up, and she can’t make it.”

“That’s too bad, I always like hearing about her boyfriend of the month. It makes me feel better about my love life, or lack thereof,” Jasmine said.

A few minutes later Sam made his way to the tent, greeted Mattie and hugged Jasmine. While everyone sat and waited for the parade to start, they talked story about what was going on in Kona and Waimea.

“How’s the clinic doing?” Jessica asked.

“Great, we’ve been really busy. Word travels fast that we’re open because it’s such a small community. As a matter of fact, I have a payment for you guys,” Jasmine said as she slipped Jessica an envelope.

“Look!” Henry pointed down the road at the fire truck coming their way with its lights on; it was the start of the parade.

“Ahh, to be six years old again,” Mattie said as she watched Henry’s excitement. Jasmine and Jessica smiled, and Sam nodded as he picked the boy up, so he could get a better view.

The second vehicle in the parade was a two-tone blue and white ‘56 Chevy convertible that carried the Grand Marshal. Jessica’s brow furrowed as she read the name Keith Shaw on the sign on the side of the car, and turned toward Jasmine. “Didn’t you date him in high school and wasn’t he the one Dad ran off because he thought the two of you were getting a little too chummy? I seem to recall having to chaperone you guys once.” Jasmine heaved out a sigh, “That would be him.”

Jessica continued, “Have you seen him since you moved here? If not, maybe you should, it looks like he did pretty well for himself if he’s the Grand Marshal.” Mattie giggled under her breath as she watched Jessica play twenty questions about Keith. Eventually, Jessica sensed Jasmine wasn’t thrilled to talk about an old boyfriend and changed the subject. The parade continued with lots of different floats and trucks all decked out with Christmas lights and decorations.

Near the end of the parade Sam pointed down the road again. “Henry, look at the canoe all lit up. I think Santa Claus is riding in it.”

Henry clapped his little hands as fast as he could as the canoe approached. Everyone heard a booming voice coming from Santa. “Mele Kalikimaka,” he shouted as he passed by.
